Iranian Soceity of Toxicology (IranTox) was established in 1990 by a group of pioneer Iranian toxicologists. The first President of IranTox was Prof. Mahdi Balali-Mood, the successive presidents are late Prof. Mahshid Afshar, Prof. Abdolkarim Pajoumand, Prof. Mohammad Abdollahi and the current president is Prof. Omid Sabzevari.

IranTox became the member of International Union of Toxicology (IUTOX) in 2001 and joined ASIATOX in 2011. IranTox is actively involved in various activities including organization of national and International Congress, advancement of toxicology and poisonings, study of health impacts of poisons and chemicals and providing advice to the authorities at the national and international levels. Iranian Journal of Toxicology is the official journal of the society which was launched in 2008, and is published quarterly.

The courses of basic and clinical toxicology in main Universities and the national board of toxicology were founded and run by the IranTox members. The program of PhD in toxicology was founded in 1989 and fellowship in clinical toxicology in 2008. Numbers of diplomats since the establishment of the courses are over 100 and frequency of exams is every year. There are about 150 certified toxicologists in academia and industries.
